Wangari Maathai is the founder of the Movement, she is an environmentalist, a civil society and women's rights activist, and a parliamentarian.
The Green Belt Movement has two divisions.

The mission of the Green Belt Movement (GBM) is to mobilize community consciousness for self-determination, equity, improved livelihoods and security, and environmental conservation.

The mission of the Green Belt Movement International (GBMI) is to empower communities worldwide to protect the environment and to promote good governance and cultures of peace.

Association spécialiste du droit des étrangers. Met son savoir à la disposition de ceux qui en ont besoin, avec des permanences juridiques gratuites, édite des publications et organise des formations. A chaque compétence du GISTI correspond un contact particulier. En dépit de son activité multiforme, le GISTI est une petite structure fragile, très sollicitée par un public souvent sans grands moyens financiers. Le GISTI travaille en relation et en collaboration avec d’autres organisation defendant les mêmes idéaux.
